Weekend Poll: Do You Stand Up for Yourself in the Office?

Now, before you start looking for questions about self advocacy, I should let you know that this marks my second annual poll on the use of stand desks in the office. In fact, I published the first poll on this topic exactly a year ago today.

The notion of having stand desks is a concept we wouldn’t even have considered a few years ago. However, times are fortunately changing. Is your workplace changing with them?

The American Journal of Preventive Medicine (click here to read the abstract)  is among those bodies that have reported on associations between early mortality rates and women with primarily sedentary behaviour. What to do about it? Well, we can make a concerted effort to be physically active in our home life and at the office.

What are some strategies for breaking the sedentary cycle in the workplace? Well, you can set alerts on your computer or phone to nudge you to get up and stretch your legs – however briefly – every 30 or 60 minutes. Novel as it may seem to some of us, there’s also the option of actually taking coffee and lunch breaks. Use that time to take a walk or work out.

Stand Desks

Stand desks are increasingly making appearances in offices, which is great news for women and men whose work days are otherwise fairly sedentary.

Encourage your friends and peers to participate in this poll, and to pay attention to the benefits of  breaking the sedentary cycle in the workplace. That leads us to this weekend’s question:

Do you have the option of using a stand desk in your office?

Please take a couple of minutes to complete the poll below, and I’ll publish results next Tuesday. “Select” whichever responses apply, and remember to CLICK on the “VOTE” ICON AFTER EACH QUESTION.
