Farmers’ Market: Colourful Produce … and Great Jewellery

How did you spend your weekend? From May through to October each year, we typically enjoy a weekend stroll to our local Farmers’ Market, which usually sees the return home weighed down with pounds of fresh produce reflecting the season. With berries and summer crops now behind us, yesterday’s selection included apples, pears,  Coronation grapes, Brussels Sprouts and root vegetables, as well as something new …

Jewellery from vintage typewriters …

What a treat it was, this weekend, to come across the work of an artisan whose jewellery creations created a bit of a traffic jam, with a little crush of women patiently – and some not-so-patiently – awaiting their turn at the table. The vintage typewriter key charms or pendants, pictured here, caught my eye – a lovely gift for anyone, but especially so for people whose career may have included a turn at the typewriter!

Clare, whose love of silver and eclectic approach to style were reflected both on the tables and in her own attire, did her best to accommodate the little throng of shoppers crowded ’round her displays, with more than one among us asking if she ships her custom pieces out of province and country (the good news: she does!). With my first purchase from Clare in hand, we made plans for me to stop by her studio and order a custom piece crafted from family silverware … I’ll keep you posted.

  1. Hi Shelagh,
Happened upon yr blog/website by accident! >.< I'm looking for typewriter key jewellery (pendant) for a dear friend and saw the picture you had posted of some person named Clare's handiwork – beautiful! Exactly what I'm looking for! But you only said that she is an artisan and that you were going to hopefully get something made from yr family's silverware in the future….but nothing about where her shop is or any contact info? I too live in the Vancouver 'area' so would have no problem running into town to get what I seek! (kind of a 'rush rush' situation here so would really appreciate an 'asap' answer if at all possible. Thanks much!

    • Cindi,

‘Morning, and am glad to help. Clare doesn’t have a retail outlet but may be found at various markets.

She does business as “The Magpie’s Nest” and has a website, http://themagpiesnest.com/. Her email address is Cvaneck@shaw.ca, and you’ll also find her phone number, upcoming markets and a link to photos of her work on the site. She’s lovely.

Hope this helps, and happy shopping!

      Shelagh
