Are you paying attention to this emergent AI and its potential impacts?
Are you among those who’ve been hearing about ChatGPT and Bard, and contemplating positive and adverse impacts this generative artificial intelligence (AI) may have on you and your career? It’s different in a few respects from search engines such as Chrome and Explorer.
For one thing, generative AI is conversational in nature; it doesn’t provide images or take you to websites. ChatGPT is designed, in its (engineers’ and programmers’) own words, “to understand and respond to natural language queries and generate human-like responses to a wide range of questions and topics”.
As mentioned in my articles here , on LinkedIn and in my newsletters since December, I’ve been playing with ChatGPT from its outset. Google’s Bard product is currently accessible to what the corporation calls “trusted testers” before making it more broadly available. I began using ChatGPT by instructing it to write a haiku and then a limerick before moving on to queries we might tend to consider in our careers, and have been writing about those experiences and sharing screenshots. I’ve also been writing about some generative AI pros and cons, and its potential impacts for people and for careers.
If you follow me on LinkedIn, you may recall an early February 2023 post in which I wrote about anticipating subscription models for which users would pay fees. Well, once again, the future is already here. When I went to play on ChatGPT on February 10th, the system alerted me to the availability of ChatGPT Plus. For $20 CAD monthly, I was offered ChatGPT that was “Available even when demand is high”, offering “Faster response speed” and “Priority access to new features”.
What about you? Have you been using ChatGPT or other generative AI? Are you discussing it with your principal (boss), and do you know whether it’s on your leadership team’s radar? That takes us to this short and snappy Weekend Poll …
What are your thoughts on generative AI?
